Designing the new replacement player.

Eurosport player is a premium streaming service (app and web player) for watching sport live and on-demand. With the current streaming provider no longer able to host video, the digital teams were asked to create a replacement player and migrate entirely off to a new platform in a short space of time.

02

Current design

In terms of design, simply ‘copying and pasting’ the current site’s look and feel would be the easier solution, but many thought this would be an opportunity to improve on the existing player. Bringing it in-house gave us more control, wider options to test, expand and add features quickly.

03

SPORT Design system

This was the best time to put our progressive design system into practice. A fair amount of work toward the 2.0 vision had been explored, and so it was simply a case of adapting the work done to fit with the player’s needs.

04

TESTING

Being data-driven and customer-centric, the UX team had the opportunity to re-define the experience for the current 1.2M subscribers. Improvements included an optimised sitemap and navigation, placing heavier emphasis on the elements customers most wish to engage with and condensing the account and subscribe journeys.

The UX team did vigorous user-testing with current users to see if the general experience had been improved from a visual and technical point of view. The task was also to validate what journeys should be completely redesigned vs what should be left alone and simply re-skinned. These sessions helped find issues and identify potential problems which could be improved.

05

Challenges

Attempting to apply the same visual language on all platforms consistently proved to be a challenge; such as considerations of spacing to accommodate for text translated into 21 languages and region-specific content.

TV apps came with its own limitations and challenges that had to be overcome. The other considerations was adhering to the UI conventions native to Android and iOS, which we decided would be more beneficial for the user.

06

LEARNINGS

To continue to learn from what went live and look to improve and optimise further. Continuously testing with users and understanding what worked and what could be changed.

Reviewing and extensive follow-through on applying that extra level of polish to what goes live. If limitations from development becomes a factor, then to take these findings and alter the design system to consider this.
